Ace That Summer Family Vacation!

Article by Walter Hummus

LLOYDMINSTER—Summer’s finally here and I’m sure we are all ready to enjoy the sun and spend money. I’ve been a travel agent for years working out of a glamorously renovated ice-cream-truck-turned-mobile-office. I don’t mean to be a brag but it’s almost daily I hear about the prowess of my travel agenting skills—no, gifts!—with nearly every customer.

“We’ve never worked there with someone like you!” they cry.

“This was absolutely chaotic!” they applaud.

“What an experience!”

It’s these motivational bursts of verbal affection that get me out of the hot tub in the neighbouring cow field every day. So I’m gonna share some of the tips and tricks of the trade to help you jumpstart your own do-it-yourself vacation because, well, my doctor said it’s time to retire and the tires are starting to deflate on the office.

So without future ado:

1. Make it a luxury trip by driving rather than flying to your selected destination. The times we live in are such a privilege: so easy to feel like you’re throwing clouds of money into the air just by filling up your tank on regular! Use premium gas to give the illusion you’re Scrooge McDuck swimming in a lake of dollar bills.

2. Pick a location with a classy yet vibrant charm. Some of my favourite places to send clients on surprise visits (that’s the joy of using a travel agent, you never know what you’re going to get!) include Sarnia, ON for the clean air, North Battleford SK for the witty name, St. John’s NL to see the sunny skies or Thompson MB to experience an unforgettable winter.

3. Don’t worry about booking a hotel in advance. Paying for deposits is such a sucker’s move, and anyone who tells you otherwise hasn’t experienced the thrill of hunting for a room at 2 a.m. during a small town ice-hockey tournament.

4. And don’t worry about luggage either! All you need to be happy is the wind and your credit card to pay your travel agent.

5. Lastly, consider travel insurance. I also sell that out of the back of my office.
