Starting July 21, a stamp with an image of one of the Roseneath Carousel’s horses will be available for purchase at Canada Post outlets. Postcards, too, will have the image.
The 116-year-old musical carousel, which has been refurbished which is open for rides on Sundays from 1 to 3 pm until Thanksgiving weekend, is one of five vintage carousel rides in Canada having stamps issued in recognition, says Roseneath Agricultural Society Secretary Barb Foreman.
Some of the others are located in Burnaby B.C., Alberta, and Montreal she told the News Now Network in an interview.
The process to get this historic fairground ride nationally recognized began 15 years after the ride’s restoration when one of the ride’s committee members, Jeremy Nicholls, who has since passed, contacted Canada Post about featuring it on a postal stamp, Foreman said.
“We didn’t get any feedback from them,” she said.
Then five years ago, Canada Post contacted the committee, and asked for a photo of one the ride’s wooden horses to use for a stamp. It was assumed that COVID-19 had interfered with the process until three week ago, when Canada Post sent an email saying the stamp would be released at postal outlets July 19, Foreman said.
Foreman and Warkworth-area resident Suzanne Atkinson are members of the carousel’s restoration committee that was originally built in 1906 by CW Parker in Kansas.Mount Forest resident Ron Schmuck maintains the Wurlitzer organ which is the last “functional one of its kind” in Canada, says Foreman, with some working models in Europe.
The carousel offers rides on 40 restored horses and in two boats. It is situated on Roseneath Fairgrounds and is easily seen from County Road 45 when its doors are open.
Definitely, a local destination for the amusement of young and old.

From the Canada Post website about the historic stamps
“This is the souvenir sheet for the Vintage Carousels stamp issue from Canada Post. The sheet features all 5 stamps in a carousel-inspired design.
This stamp issue features vintage carousels from five locations across Canada: Lakeside Park Carousel (St. Catharines, Ontario), Bowness Carousel (Calgary, Alberta), C.W. Parker Carousel No. 119 (Burnaby, British Columbia), Roseneath Carousel (Roseneath, Ontario) and Le Galopant (Montréal, Quebec).
Each stamp depicts an animal from its carousels, with the location noted at the bottom. The featured carousels demonstrate high artisan craftsmanship and impressive technological advances for their era.
Carousels originated as a military training game in the 12th century. By the mid-19th century they were mechanically-powered fairground rides with elaborately carved and painted animals and cheery band organ music.
Four of the featured carousels in this issue – Lakeside, Bowness, C.W. Parker No. 119 and Roseneath – were built in the United States in the early 1900s, while Le Galopant was manufactured in Belgium circa 1885.”
