CFUW-N Awards Scholarships/bursaries to Students

Northumberland – In June, the Canadian Federation of University Women-Northumberland (CFUW-N) awarded scholarships/bursaries to three female Campbellford District High School students, and twelve additional scholarships/bursaries were awarded to students in the other five Northumberland County high schools.

For Campbellford District High School, Olivia Newman received the annual $1,000 scholarship; Abbigail Ellis received a special one-time $1,500 STEM scholarship in honour of the 30th anniversaries of CFUW-N and of Dr. Roberta Bondar’s space flight; and Amanda Gevekoth received the new apprenticeship bursary of $500.

To be able to do this the organization needs to fundraise.

Moira Welsh, award-winning Toronto Star investigative reporter and author, will be guest speaker at CFUW-Northumberland’s 31st annual scholarship fundraiser on Monday, October 3.

In her talk, entitled: Happily Ever Older: Living Well in our Later Years, Welsh will be sharing her insights into how the right living arrangements can increase vibrancy that defies age or ability, and can create a future with strong social connections and a reason to go on living.

Welsh has written extensively on seniors’ issues, with a focus on long-term care, along with issues related to social justice, health and the environment. She has co-authored investigations that have won three National Newspaper Awards and a Michener Award for Meritorious Public Service Journalism. She was a finalist for the Justicia Award for Legal Reporting and the Canadian Hillman Prize for investigative journalism in “service of the common good.”

Autographed copies of Moira Welsh’s book, Happily Ever Older: Revolutionary Approaches to Long-Term Care, will be available for purchase.

The in-person event will be held at Dalewood Golf Club, 7465 Dale Road, Cobourg at 2:30 p.m. Doors open at 2 p.m. and light refreshments follow.

Tickets are $65 and on sale now through the CFUW-N website at cfuw-northumberland.org A partial receipt for income tax purposes will be issued. All are welcome to attend.
