The Cakes of Wrath
Article by Hugo Blue
PARIS—Mon dieu! A man dressed as an old woman in a wheelchair shocked onlookers at the Louvre this week by throwing cake at the Mona Lisa. It was not her birthday.
Puzzled members of the French community are lamenting the loss of cake.
When asked to explain himself, the man insisted: “Think about the Earth. There are people who are destroying the Earth. Think about it. All the artists tell you to think about the Earth. That’s why I did this.”
It’s true. Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa in a rare moment of climate activism. For centuries she’s symbolized how we’ve all just been having our cake and eating it too—at the expense of the natural world.
What do you think that smile is all about? Think about it.
This isn’t the first time Ms. Lisa has been targeted. In 1956, she was assaulted by vandals wielding acid and a rock (there has been speculation that the former was probably because she also represented the perceived injustice of Moroccan independence).
But the genius here isn’t in letting Ms. Lisa her eat cake. It’s in the perpetrator’s disguise!
How are we supposed to visit museums when at any moment the old lady sitting next to us might fling an éclair at the nearest Rodin? That’s no way to maintain a culture.
Touché cake guy. I guess we’ll have to rein in the carbon if we want to continue to appreciate public art. That or ban all grannies from museums, either way.
