Campbellford - Thurs., Dec. 22, 2022 - The Campbellford-Seymour Heritage Society is accepting applications for an advisory board that will carry the ball for the creation of a Trent Hills Sports Wall of Honour.

Seven people will be chosen to implement the project which will pay tribute to individuals whose outstanding athletic achievements have brought fame to themselves and to Trent Hills.
It will also include sponsors and builders whose support was instrumental in nourishing local sports.

The accomplishments and contributions of the honourees will be encapsulated in kiosks set up in the new Campbellford Recreation and Wellness Centre, the Hastings Field House, and the Warkworth arena.

The project is being spearheaded by Jim Peeling, a well-known figure in the local sports community and host of a Saturday morning sports talk show on CKOL. He’s also vice-president of the heritage society.

Funding to get the project off the ground is being provided by the Campbellford Kinettes, which voted this month to give the heritage society $5,000. “That’s all the money you need to get started for the first year,” Peeling said. The money will be used to make plaques with photos “for the first go-round. I don’t have the funding for the kiosks. That’s probably going to be year two, subject to money (being secured) … Whatever ends up inside the municipality’s facilities is not going to be Mickey Mouse, I can tell you.”
“There’s no taxpayer dollars going into this,” he added.

It’s Peeling’s hope that the first induction ceremony will take place in the spring, but it will be up to the advisory board “to come up with (a) plan of attack” as to who and how many will be inducted and when.
“The advisory board controls it … (and) will make those decisions,” he said.

He envisions anywhere from 50 to 60 people eventually being honoured.

The Heritage Society will choose who sits on the advisory board based “on their demonstrated interest in local sports heritage,” according to the application form, which can be obtained by visiting the Campbellford-Seymour Heritage Centre at 113 Front St. N, Campbellford (open Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) or by emailing Peeling at [email protected].

The deadline is Jan. 31, 2023.
