The newly-rebranded Northumberland Festival of the Arts (NFOTA) is an artist-led, not-for-profit corporation dedicated to showcasing the arts and artists of Northumberland County, Ontario.

The disruption of COVID has inspired the folks of the Festival, to really hit the ground running this year.

During the duration, there is a 5-venue-gallery display of art and photography in Cobourg, the Art Gallery of Northumberland, Warkworth and Colborne. See https://festivalofthearts.ca/events/

Louise Halfe – Sky Dancer

The roster of events includes: gallery exhibits, a massive poetry reading, painting, writing, art workshops, music, dinner theatre, dramatic readings, studio tour, book fair, book launches, Alderville First Nation exhibits, workshop and a guided tour, plus opening and closing events. Many events are ticketed with some offering free admission.

Official Opening was held Fri Sept 16 at Victoria Hall, Cobourg

The NFOTA’s opening ceremonies for NFOTA’s sixteen days with National Poet Laureate, Louise Halfe – Sky Dancer opened the festival. Performances by Ted Staunton and Friends, What Fun!, Jessica Outram as well as a Premier Public Screening of “Arcadia”, a multi-art genre story by Dimitri Papatheodorou, and two art exhibits at the AGN. The public had the chance to meet artists, sponsors and organizers and enjoy an entertaining kick-off to NFOTA 2022.

WOW! Words on a Wire – Poetry Event this past Sat Sept 17 at Victoria Hall, Cobourg

20 national, provincial and local poets on stage — a multi-media presentation and following…. first of its kind, only in the Feel Good Town of Ontario, a…. Poetry Parade!

3 Staged Dramatic Readings — Sat 17 - Trinity-St Andrews United Church, Brighton

A night of original one-act plays. Selected from 18 local writer submissions. these plays will be premiered as staged readings featuring local performers. Titles include: Screwed, Nail Polish and Wind on Weller’s Bay.

An event where you can enjoy classical music, cumbia (latin rhythm) and rock in the same concert. It is an experience where music and storytelling are entangled and combined rock, classic and other genres of music.

Celebrating Resilience – Fall Reading Series — Wed Sept 21 — 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. — Let’s Talk Books, Cobourg

Listen to local and other authors read from their latest books. Readers include Vickie Delany, Canada’s “one-woman-crime wave” reading from her latest novel.

Postcards from Northumberland – Classical Music with Richard Herriott — Sat 24 — 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm — Trinity United Church, Cobourg

Concert pianist Richard Herriott premiers his composition “Postcards from Northumberland” and is joined by Violinist David Shewchuk in performing a program of J.S. Bach, Paganini, Sarasate, and Gershwin. The backdrop is a tapestry of images curated by Art Historian Evan McMurtry.

Folk Concert — Together We Can: Music across Generations — Sat Oct 1 — 7 pm to 9 pm — Victoria Hall, Cobourg

An inter-generational concert celebrating all things musical in Northumberland County. From fiddles to choir, original songs to musical theatre.

Festival Finale — Oct. 3 — 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. — Victoria Hall, Cobourg

Join with artists, performers and organizers for a celebratory lunch with a thank you to partners and supporters. Event catered by Chef Michelle with a cash bar. The entertainment includes the screening of the winning entry and presentation of the award for FAN’s competition for young filmmakers; a display of the winning entries in the NFOTA photo contest and other awards. Marie-Lynn Hammond will sing, and NFOTA’s actors will present their third staged reading of three one-act plays specially written for the festival by regional authors, Screwed by Don J. Anderson, Nail Polish by Chris Cameron, and Wind Over Weller’s Bay by Karen Palmer.
