Statement from MP Philip Lawrence on VIA Day of Action
Cobourg - Philip Lawrence, Member of Parliament for Northumberland–Peterborough South, released the following statement on the VIA Day of Action:
“Since VIA Rail reduced services in Northumberland–Peterborough South, residents have been left stranded. As Canada continues to open up post-pandemic, VIA has fallen behind and has not restored train routes to pre-pandemic levels. Despite multiple letters to VIA and the Minister of Transportation, nothing has been done to restore the service that is so vital to our community.
“That is why I am proud to be a part of the VIA Day of Action, where residents can peacefully demonstrate to VIA the importance of Train 651 to our community. The day of action will take place on Friday, September 9th, at 2:00 PM at the Cobourg VIA Station. Provincial and municipal representatives will be there to join residents in demanding that VIA lives up to its promise to provide travellers with a ‘convenient, efficient and reliable alternative to the automobile’, specifically the travellers of Northumberland–Peterborough South.”
